Guest new_galaxy_maybe Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Hi I'm new on here so be easy with me! I've been looking at buying a Galaxy 1.9tdi W Reg. The garage I would be buying it from says the car has remote central locking but the key has been lost so only has the normal key(key with one button for light) for locking/unlocking it. So I have 2 questions! 1 - Is there anyway to tell if this car does have remote central locking as he says? 2 - Is it expensive to replace the remote key? Thanks from a potential Galaxy owner, wife & 3 kids!! Quote
NikpV Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Welcome to the forum Do you know what trim level - LX, Zetec or Ghia the car is - Ghia has remote central locking as standard A remote key will set you back about Quote
zeplin43 Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Hi New Galaxy Maybe welcome to the forum. My guess is that it has remote control have never seen one without. They are expensive and the key has to be programed so it will operate the ignition. My best guess is to try and put the remote issue in the deal, ask the seller to get you the remote that operates the car. NikpV Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 According to ford site current zetec models don't have remote central locking but I've lost my brochure and so can't be sure - of the 17 on ebay atm only 4 specify it - if its important to you I would do as zeplin suggested, ask the dealer to sort out a key (even if you have to pay for it) - you could of course get an aftermarket kit fitted, probably less than fords price for a new key about Quote
sanjsanj Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 HANG ONI thought there were only two combinations:Key with a small torch+ a normal key(no torch or remote control) ORkey with central locking + a normal key (no torch or remote control) anyone wanna confirm/deny this? Quote
NikpV Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 HANG ONI thought there were only two combinations:Key with a small torch+ a normal key(no torch or remote control) ORkey with central locking + a normal key (no torch or remote control) anyone wanna confirm/deny this? don't know but with our Ghia we got remote key + plain key (no torch)so if you're correct then it would imply that op has torch key from first combination - confirming suspicion that it does not have remote cl. Ps new 2006 ghias have two remote keys Quote
Guest new_galaxy_maybe Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Looks like he could be telling porkies about the remote central locking. Think I will ask him to provide a working remote key or get him to drop the asking price a bit more! Thanks for you help! Quote

PRICES: http://www.whatcar.com/newautotrader/valuations_search.aspalso check parkers..... If you're buying from a ford shop, then you can easily drop the price by about 4-5 hundred....ANOTHER GREAT way of reducing the asking price is to check everything, and i mean EVERYTHING!!all the electrics, whether the car pull or not, whether it pulls under braking, check the spare tyre and see if its in good condition, operate the wipers and the washers: its well known for leaks in the front passengers footwell, if, when opening/closing a window, you hear unexpected noises, mention it...check the cruise control, if the climate control flashes when you start it, say you want it fixed, check the drivers side electric window button- as its the most used, its likely to be out of order....if hes got VAG COM (or even if you have, surprise him!!) , ask him or tell him you're gunna check for and fault codes, is that alright :( :( :(if hes been tellling porkies about the remote control, then he could be lying about other things....ALSO check the vanity mirriors in the sun blind thingy and check if their lights work properly- these can easliy flatten the battery! NikpV Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 how about the aux heater, difficult to check - will only come on when ambient temp is less than 5C and coolant less than 75C - in warm weather the only way is to short the temp sensor (on wiper linkage) and start from cold - aux heater should fire, under the car in front of near side rear wheel and especially the air con - see the faq for the outlet temps for ambient temps Quote
zeplin43 Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Try to close the doors with the key if all the doors lock with the key then it probably has remote locking. But your best bet is to do the deal with every thing working believe me with so many used cars for sale the dealer will do almost anything to sell the car. sanjsanj Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Try to close the doors with the key if all the doors lock with the key then it probably has remote locking...... thats not a check for remote locking....it may just have the basic central locking without the REMOTE central locking....i think the only way to find out is to ask dealer for a spare key and see what he says UNLESS anyone knows where the sensor is located to receive the radio signal from the remote control come to think of it, does anyone really know where its located? NikpV Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 AFAIK It doesn't have any obvious outward appearance - the IrD remotes which preceeded the wirless had a couple of dark red domes Quote
NikpV Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 item 13 is the central locking module - I would assume the antenna is in there Quote
sanjsanj Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 hmm, my manual said that theres one in the front of the car and one in the back... Quote
NikpV Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 well 5 & 6 are the tailgate lock and tailgate lock actuator, nothing to indicate that there is an antenna there. I wonder if its a holdover from when there was an IrD dome at each end. The instructions for programming the wirelkess remote include 'pointing it at the rear view mirror' which was the location of one of the IrD domes, I wonder if that is also a holdover from then as well. Guest 3.5bullet Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 so my question is still valid? is it a mk1 or a mk2? as this makes a big difference in the level of standard features in the zetec range! Quote
